Why recover rather than replace?

A quality lampshade frame can last a lifetime. Recovering gives it a completely new look while saving it from landfill. It's the sustainable, sensible choice.

How does the postal service work?

It's simpler than you might think:

1. Send me a few photos and measurements of your lampshade for a no-obligation quote

2. Once we've agreed on fabric and price, I'll ask for a deposit

3. Pack your shade carefully and post it to me (I can advise on packaging)

4. I'll recover it and send it back to you via courier, fully insured

Customers send their shades to me from all over the UK, from Cornwall to Scotland, and are always delighted with the results.

Can I come in to talk to you about my lampshade if I'm local?

Yes of course! Please contact me to arrange an appointment. To give you an indication of cost before you come in, please send me an email with photos of your lampshade and the dimensions and I can give you a quote.

Why do traditional lampshade recoverings cost more?

When you choose a traditional hand-sewn recovering, you're not just getting a new piece of fabric stretched over a frame, you're investing in a painstaking, skilled process that can take mulitple hours to days per shade.

Every recovering starts by carefully stripping the original fabric from the frame. I then inspect the frame fully, sanding and respraying it where needed so the foundation is sound before anything else begins. Next, the frame is bound by hand with cotton tape, this is what the fabric will ultimately be anchored to, and it has to be done precisely.

Once the frame is prepared, the fabric is hand stretched and pinned carefully into position. This stage requires patience and a skilled eye, the tension has to be just right across the whole shade before a single stitch goes in. Only once I'm completely happy with the shape is the fabric hand sewn onto the frame, before the binding and trim are attached to finish.

It's a labour of love, and the price reflects the hours of skilled work that go into every single shade. But the result is a beautifully restored lampshade that will last for many more years to come.

What about fabric?

I have a selection of in-house printed and plain linen fabrics to choose from. You're also very welcome to source your own fabric and I'll advise you on the right weight and type. If you'd like me to source something specific, I offer a fabric sourcing service for £25.

Customer Reviews

'I contacted Jo at Lume Lighting to see if she could refurbish the pagoda shaped lampshade on my oriental brass lamp. Jo was extremely helpful in advising me on material options and once chosen, I sent her the shade to recover it. The task was completed quickly and returned in very sturdy packaging. Some companies I approached would not tackle the job due to the unusual shape. Jo had the experience to take on the project and did an excellent job at a fair cost. I would not hesitate to recommend Lume Lighting if you have a cherished lampshade that needs restoring.'

'A complete triumph!

I asked Jo to recover my faded pendant shades since finding replacements of the right depth was impossible. Reusing them was more sustainable, and I could choose fabric to suit my décor. I'm delighted with my bespoke shades, and it feels so much better to recycle than create waste. Jo did a fantastic job and is wonderful to work with - I highly recommend her.'
