Lume On Location with Martha Mitchell Design

Posted by Joanna Corney on

Lume on Location is a series of blog posts that showcase my products in some amazing local people's homes! Throughout this series I will be asking people to choose their favourite Lume product and photograph them in their lovely homes. It is a wonderful way to tell you about these brilliant women and men and what they do, but also get to see my lights in different peoples interiors and settings.

So to kick this series off, let me introduce you to the marvellous Martha Mitchell Design! Martha designs beautiful illustrative homeswares and gifts and has been running her business for over 10 years! I am lucky enough to share my studio with Martha and see all of her creations take shape! Martha has recently had a lovely little boy and had a small break from her business, but she is back now (which means I get her back in the studio too, wohoooo) and starting to gear up one of her busiest seasons!

So let’s get started and find out some more about Martha and her interior style...

Tell me a bit about yourself and your business

Hello – I run my own homeware and gift business based in a lovely studio in Hove! (Which I happen to share with the marvellous Lume lighting!)

I create a large collection of products ranging from prints, tea-towels and aprons to mugs, coasters and magnets! All my products are decorated with intricate black and white illustrations of different cities including London, Scotland, Liverpool and my most popular range – Brighton

Why is my wooden pendant light your favourite Lume product?

I absolutely love Lume’s wooden pendant light – it is the geometric shapes that first attracted me to it and I love the simplicity of it! I also like seeing the exposed elements in the lightbulb.

How would you describe your interior style?

I live in a lower basement flat and so because of this I like to keep my interior style nice and bright! All the rooms are painted white but I like to then have lots of colourful prints/textiles and bits of bobs to add splashes of colour! I also have lots of wicker and rattan! I am also obsessed with plants so they are in every room - I can’t stop buying them!

Do you think lighting is important in the home and if so why?

Yes definitely! I think it is so important for creating an atmosphere whether it be night or day! And again as I am lower basement I had to put a lot of thought into lighting.

What is your favourite thing in your home and why?

It has got to be my new tiles in my hallway! It took us over a year to choose them – they are a Moroccan tile style in a bluey green and are made from porcelain rather than cement. I love that they are the first thing you see when you open the front door!
